USC vs. Arkansas Basketball Preview – Pessimist View

This is a must win for USC, who has pretty much squandered there chances to make the big dance after a tough lose to UGA on Saturday. Arkansas is leading the SEC West, and is looking to improve their chances of making the tournament as well. Tonights game will feature two of the most exciting point guards in the SEC, maybe the country. Devan Downey 5-9 vs. Courtney Fortson 5-11 should be a great match up. Both guards are the life line for their teams, and will dictate how their team does. Mike Washington is a quality player in the post for the Hogs, and has had some big games against Carolina in the past.

USC is 1-7 on the road this year and has not look good in their last 2 road loses. Arkansas is 4-1 this season at home in the SEC, with the only lose at home to the hands of the Florida Gators.

What will happen: USC will continue to shoot poorly on the road, and will get down early to the hogs. Look for Carolina to fight back but come up short once again. If USC does lose tonight, they you can pretty much stick a fork in the Gamecock’s chances of making the NCAA tournament unless the win the SEC tournament. A road win against the top of the SEC West would look good.

If Downey can get to the free throw line at least 10-12 times, look for him to have another 30 point night. He will have to put this team on his shoulders once again. He will need to drive to the basket to make things happen. Carolina can’t rely on the 3 point shot as they did late against Georgia and expect to pull out the victory. Inside play will be key, and both teams match up pretty well in the post. That is unless Steed gets in foul trouble early. Muldrow will need to have a big night on the boards for the Gamecocks to even have a chance tonight.

Prediction: USC 66 Arkansas 73
