USC Gamecocks Defeat PC in Baseball, 15-0

The South Carolina Gamecocks baseball team (5-2) soundly defeated Presbyterian (1-7) today at Carolina Stadium.  This was a great tune-up match before the Clemson series this weekend.

The Gamecocks out hit PC 18-2 and jumped out to a early lead after getting 8 runs in the second inning.  Another big boost came in the 6th inning with Whit Merrifield hitting a grand slam that got Carolina a 15-0 lead.

Nice outing for sophomore pitcher Nolan Belcher as he picked up the win, allowing just one hit over five innings of work. Belcher struck out seven batters and walked one.

Congrats to Scott Wingo for getting the school record for being “Hit by a Pitch” the most in his USC career than anyone else.

Big weekend series this weekend versus arch-rival Clemson with Game 1 in Clemson, then Greenville and then the final game in Columbia.  Should be a early season taste of the “Road to Omaha.”

South Carolina is 11-8 against Clemson in Columbia and 10-9 in Clemson in the 2000s. The Gamecocks are 2-0 in neutral venues against the Tigers (Omaha in 2002).
