Nebraska and South Carolina to kick off 2011 season?

Rumors are circulating that Nebraska and South Carolina might be targets for the Chick-Fil-A kickoff game for 2011 season.  The rumors are being reported by College Football Times.  At this point no other details are available.

Why it might be true…South Carolina has wanted in this game for some time and the close proximity of Columbia to Atlanta would sell tickets.  Further, Steve Spurrier is still a TV draw that ESPN would be interested in.  The Chick-Fil-A Kickoff people would be interested in Nebraska for obvious reasons, it is a perennial powerhouse with national appeal.  Nebraska would be interested since they need another game for 2011, and a national spotlight game would be advantageous in many ways.

Why it might not be true…As much as we love South Carolina, there are other programs with larger national appeal who would be interested.  If Nebraska wants to come, wouldn’t Tennessee or Georgia make for a bigger draw?  Nebraska coming would also mean that the ACC gets shut out, and the ACC wouldn’t be at all happy about that.  South Carolina has an open slot on its schedule for 2011, but not for week one; they are supposed to play East Carolina in Charlotte.  Also, no major media sources (print or online) are reporting it.

If it happens, it will be great for South Carolina, and I hope it does, but until we know more, I wouldn’t count on it.
