South Carolina beat Clemson tonight at Memorial Stadium by a humbling score of 29-7. After Clemson got an early touchdown to go up 7-0, the Gamecocks clamped down on the Tigers and controlled the game.
We’ll have much more on this game tomorrow in the field report and in the next few days, but I wanted to get a few thoughts out to those of you who might still be up tonight.
First, this was a dominating win. South Carolina spent much of the second half running the clock down. If they were still passing the ball, this game might have been 40 something to 7. Coach Spurrier kept running the ball into the teeth of the Clemson defense, and the minutes kept melting off the clock.
Second, South Carolina was clearly the better team. There is no question that the entire team is better. From the players’ talent to the coaches to the scheme, South Carolina would win this game 100 times out of 100.
Third, the defense, who has been maligned at times, showed up and dominated in this game.
Lastly, this is a new era of South Carolina football. South Carolina is on the way up; Clemson is floundering.
Enjoy tonight and know there are many more like it on the way.
