Steve Spurrier has given defensive back Victor Hampton a second chance.
On the heels of last week’s decision, Spurrier has made a reversal of the original decision to boot the young man off the team and has granted Hampton a fresh start to being a football player for the University of South Carolina.
As reported earlier, Hampton had been dismissed for what was called a “violation of team rules” and it seemed to stem around poor academics and a lack of participation in voluntary team workouts. According to various media reports, Coach Spurrier met with Hampton and his parents and together they came up with a new set of guidelines for Hampton to follow. Safe to say, Hampton is now on thin ice from this point forward.
For Gamecock fans, this is good news as Hampton was listed as a second string defensive back behind Stephon Gilmore on the depth chart. The Gamecocks secondary needs warm bodies and depth so having the talented Hampton back in the mix improves what was looked at as the weaker area of the Gamecocks defense.
Now that this issue appears to be cleared up, there is still one Gamecock to watch and that is DeVonte Holloman who was arrested last week and charged with DUI. Per athletic department rules involving a arrest, Holloman is suspended indefinitely until the school can sort through the legal issues. Holloman is a good young man with no blemishes on his record so most likely he could miss one game and be ready for Georgia.
Hopefully, the rest of summer can be quiet until USC plays East Carolina.
