South Carolina Basketball: Five Things Learned in SE Louisiana Win

The South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Southeastern Louisiana Lions by the score of 62-43.  The win moves the Gamecocks to a overall record of 5-6 and now they will have a week off before facing Wofford next week in a home game at the Colonial Life Arena.

So what did we learn from this win?  Here are five things:

1. Malik Cooke is the leader of the team at this point in the season.  He had 14 points in the win but stepped up on the defensive side of the ball and seemed to be the glue keeping the Gamecocks moving in the right direction as a team.

2.  Anthony Gill is the offensive catalyst.  Cooke may be the leader but wins occur when Gill has a solid game it seems.  Gill also had 14 points.

3.  Gamecocks have to be aggressive every game hence.  USC needs to show more of this going forward.  South Carolina forced 26 turnovers on the night leading to 30 points.

4. Seems SC can finally shoot free throws.  Remember the days when USC could not hit the side of a building at the charity stripe?  Well it seemed things finally have improved for the Gamecocks at the free throw line.  In this game, USC was 16-of-24.  Not bad and much needed.

5.  Bruce Ellington has not found his basketball rhythm yet.  Ellington only shot 1-for-7  but need provide some leadership in the back court.  He has to find his shot as this team needs his penetration and scoring to make the SEC slate of games interesting.
