South Carolina football team picked up a big commitment as linebacker Kaiwan Lewis (6’2” 228lbs.) out of Hammonton, New Jersey chose USC. He picked the Gamecocks over offers from Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, and several other programs.
Lewis, whose father is a native of Mullins, S.C., was in town for the Gamecock Showcase Camp last week, and after discussing the his collegiate choice with his family he chose USC.
Lewis is the nation’s No. 6 inside linebacker prospect and the No. 9 prospect in the Garden State according to 247Sports. The three major recruiting services all have Lewis listed as a four star prospect.
In high school he played defensive end and linebacker, but right now he is slated to play as a MIKE linebacker at South Carolina. Lewis was a Press of Atlantic City first-team All-Star last season for the St. Joseph Wildcats, which won the state Non-Public II title. He made 79 tackles with six sacks. He also intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble.
Lewis runs a 4.76 in the 40 so he has good speed and has a knack for being around the ball. He is a tough nosed player that is ready for the challenge of the SEC. The Gamecocks need depth at linebacker as the six players currently listed on the three deep depth chart at that position are all juniors or older. With the Gamecocks only have one other linebacker in the 2012 class, this was a key pick-up for USC and Lewis will get the chance to compete early.
Lewis is recruit No. 18 for the Gamecocks Class of 2012 and here is a video of him in action –
