ReCap: Gamecocks lose to Rebels, 57-66

The hole was too deep for South Carolina to climb out of in the second half.  The Gamecocks found themselves down 15 at halftime (38-23) and just could not get back over that hurdle in the second half.  The Gamecocks whittled the lead down within 6 points twice but could not inch closer due to timely defense from the Rebels.

Carolina was lead by Downey with 25pts and only one other player was in double digits – Galloway with 11.  That is not a winning formula as SC needs another scoring threat to emerge.

The Rebels did task number one – slowing Devan Downey – very well and it proved good enough to keep the Gamecocks at bay.  Smart strategy – Stop Downey.  I am sure we will see this defensive game plan by opposing teams from here on out until someone else proves that they can aid the fight and score points in bunches.

I’ve been surprised by the lackluster play of Muldrow.  Now is the time big boy to step up your game as 9 pts and 5 rebounds is not cutting it.  The Gamecocks need him to bring his “A” game each contest.  I am not going to talk about missing Archie and Holmes because it is reality and time to move on.  The entire team has to come together and play as a team.  Being slow out the gate is not helping the situation.

Next up is Florida this weekend.  I like our chances in this game as both teams are young.
