Gamecocks Beat Auburn in Game 1, 11-5

The Gamecocks won Game 1 versus the Auburn Tigers by the score of 11-5 on Friday night.  Always good to get the win in the first game so the backs are not against the wall.

South Carolina starter Blake Cooper pitched seven innings and allowed four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and four walks to earn his fourth victory of the season.

Stars of the game:  Adam Matthews going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Parker Bangs batting 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

This seemed like the Gamecocks of old, you know the one’s that relied on the long ball to set up the win.  As we all know, this Gamecock squad is not on pace currently to match the home run power of prior teams.  The Gamecocks have averaged 100 homers each of the last nine years if I am correct.  This squad is on pace to hit around 60ish in 2010.  But as noted, last night South Carolina broke out with eight runs over the first two innings powered by three home runs.  Great to see good hitting matched with good pitching.  That is the winning formula and thus SC is riding a 12 game winning streak.  Love to see it pushed to 14 and SC get a sweep at Auburn but as stated earlier, just win the series please.

Carolina is 18-4 and 4-0 in the SEC while the loss drops the Tigers to 16-3 and 3-1 in conference play (and ends their 7 game winning streak – HA!). Both teams face off again on today with first pitch set for 1 p.m. ET at Plainsman Park.
