Three Post-Spring Questions Facing the Gamecocks Football Team

garcia111987894Now that the University of South Carolina Gamecocks have concluded their spring practices and spring game, it is time now for the fan base to relax until the start of the season right? No way, as now starts the speculation and all the “what if’s” concerning the program as the “arm-chair quarterbacks” now begin to determine that they know best on how to position the USC Gamecocks for success in 2010.

Success is certainly within reach for USC in 2010 but coming out of spring practice there are still some lingering questions associated with the Gamecocks. Let’s look at the top three questions facing the Gamecocks post-spring –

1. Will the USC offensive line improve in 2010?
Most everyone who watches SEC football knows that SC has had issues at the OL spot which does not bold well for a coach that has an offensive system that relies on time in the pocket for the QB and a good running game to open up the passing game. USC has its’ third offensive line coach in as many years and the goal this year is to get out of the cellar of the SEC in sacks allowed and rushing yards per game. New USC OL Coach Shawn Elliott has the task of sorting through the existing and new players to put together an improved line. Early indications are positive that the new coach with his hard-nosed style is going to field a competitive unit. This must occur for USC to find success in 2010 or it could be a repeat of past seasons and mediocrity.

2. Where is the team’s leadership going to come from?
Gone from the team is the heart and soul – LB Eric Norwood. Lacking is leadership on this team as this team is young and the big question is who or whom will take over and lead the players in the SEC battles. Could see DE Cliff Matthews, FB/TE Patrick DiMarco and possibly QB Stephen Garcia assume the role as leaders/captains for the team. Leadership from the players side must step forward to help get over the many hurdles the upcoming season will present.

3. Is Garcia ready to be the type QB Spurrier desires?
All eyes on Stephen.  Much talk has been devoted to Garcia and his abilities combined with the emergence of the slated back-ups – QB Connor Shaw, QB Andrew Clifford – as anyone who knows college football also knows that success of Spurrier’s team begins with the guy under center. So all eyes on Garcia and his ability to grow “post-spring,” as he must do the necessary things this summer to become all that the Carolina faithful expects or it could be a long season.

Well those are just the Top 3 Questions facing the team out of Columbia in my view. Let’s hear your concerns facing SC post-spring ball…
