In looking over USC alums in the MLB, I noticed that former Gamecocks baseball star Billy Buckner will start today for the Arizona Diamondbacks versus the Toronto Blue Jays at 4:10pm. This will be Buckner’s second start of the 2010 season after getting called up from Reno on May 18th. Billy Buckner is in his third year playing professional baseball and has started 34 games in that span since leaving Columbia, SC.
In his first start of 2010 filling in as a “spot duty starter,” Buckner pitched well but got the loss versus the Florida Marlins. His record stands at 0-1, 3.60 ERA, 4 k’s, 1 BB and a 1.40 WHIP.
He needs to pitch well today or it could be back to the minors for him as he is keeping the spot warm for former Clemson star Kris Benson, who is on the DL yet coming back very soon.
Good Luck Billy.
