Know Your Bucknell Bison: Part 1

Bucknell University is a private liberal arts university located in the town of Lewisburg, PA.

Here is some general stuff —

  • Bucknell was founded in 1846, and is among the top 20 U.S. liberal arts colleges in terms of the number of graduates who go on to earn doctorates. It has over 50 majors and 60 minors.
  • Although it is primarily an undergraduate school (with 3,400 students), there are also 150 graduate students on the campus. Students come from all 50 states, and from more than 50 countries. Bucknell is part of the Patriot League in Division I athletics.

The Bison from Bucknell won their fifth Patriot League Championship this year but should not make too much noise in this regional but don’t overlook them.  Bucknell is making its fifth NCAA appearance, all since 1996. The Bison last qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2008 and upset No. 4 national seed Florida State in their first game. Bucknell is 1-8 all-time in NCAA play.  Bucknell and South Carolina have never met on the baseball diamond. The Bison have also never played The Citadel. They are 0-3 all-time against Virginia Tech.  Bucknell earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament by winning the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 4 seed in the four-team field. The Bison defeated both No. 1 seed Army and No. 3 seed Holy Cross on the road in best-of-three series to claim their record-tying fifth Patriot League crown.

Here are some tidbits to know –

  • Bucknell hit 17 home runs during its six-game run in the Patriot League Tournament. The Bison entered the tournament with a school-record 55 home runs and proceeded to break the one-year-old Patriot League record as well. Multiple Bison (Doug Shribman – 20, Andrew Brouse – 17, Ben Yoder – 10) have reached double figures in home runs for the first time in program history.
  • While Bucknell enters the NCAA Tournament with a 25-33 record, it is outscoring its opponents 380-361. The Bison have posted 14 games with at least 10 runs scored and recorded double figures in hits on 26 occasions.
  • Bucknell’s fielding percentage this year is a strong .972
