The University of South Carolina Baseball team had another one of its’ players selected today in the MLB draft. To go along with Sam Dyson going to the Blue Jays, Gamecocks OF/IF Whit Merrifield was selected in the ninth round as the 269th overall pick by Kansas City.
Merrifield is batting .332 (84-for-253) on the year with a team-leading 12 HR and 38 RBI on the year. He is second in the SEC in runs scored with 68 and leads the SEC as well with 13 sacrifice bunts. With 252 career hits, he is now seventh on the USC All-Time hits list.
The real question with him is will he sign?
I don’t think he will as he knows is better than a 9th round pick for 9th round money. I predict he will come back adn I really hope he does make that choice.
If he does decide to leave then he will be in the minors a few years but I think he has a real chance at MLB time.
