South Carolina had arguably the most impressive series win over the weekend when they took two out of three at Florida. Some fans and commentators speculated that the Gamecocks would assume the number one position when polls were released on Monday afternoon. That wasn’t the case.
Poll | Rank | Prev. |
Baseball America | 3 | 4 |
Collegiate Baseball | 3 | 7 |
Perfect Game | 3 | 5 |
USA Today | 4 | 4 |
Apparently the rest of the baseball world wasn’t as impressed with the weekend win as we were. The Gamecocks remain behind Virginia and Vanderbilt in all four polls, and inexplicably they remained behind Florida in the USA Today / Coaches’ poll. They’ll just have to keep winning until they become number one or they win in Omaha again.
South Carolina is a Top 5 team in RPI as well. According to Warren Nolan’s RPI, USC is exactly number 5. That puts them in a solid position for a national seed.
The weekend’s win was big for conference play. South Carolina moved into a three way tie for first place in the East. The SEC East now looks like this:
Conf | Overall | |
South Carolina | 4-2 | 18-5 |
Florida | 4-2 | 21-4 |
Vanderbilt | 4-2 | 22-3 |
Georgia | 3-3 | 11-13 |
Tennessee | 2-4 | 18-6 |
Kentucky | 2-4 | 14-11 |
