Gamecocks Beat UConn, Head to Omaha

The South Carolina Gamecocks baseball team is Omaha bound to defend their 2010 National Championship at the 2011 College World Series as they defeated Connecticut in Game 2 by the score of 8-2.  The USC win in Game 2 gave them the best-of-three series after beating the Huskies in Game 1 by the score of 5-1.

The Gamecocks owe a lot to the bat of Christian Walker who hit a clutch home run to push USC into a 3-2 lead.  Later in the ninth, the Gamecocks got the needed insurance of five runs to ensure victory after UConn’s pitching failed them.  The game overall was full of drama as it seemed the USC defense was so-so but stepped up big time when needed to get three game saving double plays.  Credit the Huskies as they made this Super Regional worth the price of admission but tip your hat to Tanner’s boys for grinding out a win.

The Gamecocks offense was fueled by five doubles and by the Gamecocks bullpen who kept the game in check.  Matt Price came in to shut the door on the Huskies chances and ensure the win.

Tanner and the fans have to be proud of the Gamecocks as this UConn team was a good one but USC showed a lot of heart and toughness.

This will be South Carolina’s 10th trip to the CWS.  Let’s hope this trip is just as special as the last.
