Steve Spurrier has announced that sophomore quarterback Connor Shaw will start for the USC Gamecocks on Saturday against the Kentucky Wildcats.
This is a good thing and by no means is the complete answer so don’t expect a miracle but it should add a different flare to the offense. Shaw (6’1″ 204 lbs.) is a coaches son so he is knowledgeable of the game and is a good runner. He knows the plays just needs experience in executing them.
We as fans of the USC program need to rally behind Shaw now. Support him and don’t boo him if he makes a mistake. We stood by and watched Stephen Garcia throw six interceptions in two games so let’s give the young guy a chance.
Spurrier said this is his game to shine and will give him every opportunity barring injury. Garcia will be the back-up. Expect to see more short passes and moving the pocket around to play to Shaw’s strengths. Also Shaw should do well in the zone-read running game so you may see more QB designed runs to take advantage of Shaw abilities.
Garcia we still love ya and hope you get the confidence back but we are ready for this move at this moment. This is a team and not just one person. This team has loads of talent and needs to try this quarterback change as the season is young.
For the season, Shaw is 4-of-11 for 29 passing yards and has ran the ball nine times for 40 yards. He was the most improved QB for the spring and let’s hope he improves the Gamecocks offense going forward.
I am happy Spurrier is giving Shaw the chance. Heck, can not play much worse right? Change is good.
