Gamecocks Football: Noteworthy Notes on April 13th

The South Carolina football program will conduct the annual spring “Garnet & Black” game on Saturday, April 14th but before we enjoy the game, we wanted to give some recent notes on the football team.

Here goes our noteworthy notes:

—Make sure to read ESPN’s Chris Low’s interview with Coach Steve SpurrierHERE.  Good stuff, eh?

—Who will be No. 2? Seems that there is a battle between senior Seth Strickland and sophomore Dylan Thompson for the No. 2 quarterback spot according to coach Steve Spurrier.  Also Spurrier has said that Thompson will get most of the snaps in Saturday’s spring game.

—Hanging with Mr. Cooper…Well not really but it is good to see freshman Cedrick Cooper back at practice recently after missing more than a week due to a back injury. Coaches and this blog have high hopes for him in 2012.

—No more coffee….junior fullback Matt Coffee will not return to the team this fall due to chronic knee injuries, RBs coach Everette Sands. His departure will free up a scholarship.

—-Down goes Jeffery….freshman Shamier Jeffery, the younger brother of Alshon Jeffery, had surgery recently to repair a torn meniscus. Jeffery will miss the remainder of spring practice but is expected to be healthy by fall.

—Super Bruce? This could be the case as Bruce Ellington will work out with the football team in the mornings and the basketball team in the afternoon throughout the summer according to him.  Just thinking about that makes me tired.

—The running back unit is getting better and that is scary…freshman Shon Carson is expected to be cleared for full participation by May after healing up from his ACL injury last fall.

And a recruiting issue to watch…

—QB Connor Mitch of Raleigh will attend USC’s spring game on Saturday afternoon and will cut his list to a top two soon after that visit.  If you see him, show him some Gamecock love!
