So the Gamecocks held their first spring scrimmage yesterday and the Gamecocks won. Just kidding but as is always the case there is not a whole lot to take away from things like this as it is more about going through the motions with the first outing. It is like taking a test drive of a new car for the first time, just checking some things out and seeing how it responds.
A couple of leftovers to take away from yesterday:
2 QBS
As Travis Haney of the Post&Courier wrote – All Eyes on the QBs– and rightfully so as strong qb play is the key to a Spurrier offense. It is good to have two choices this go round as SC didn’t have this problem last year. But it is always a story-line in the Spring so careful reading too much into it. I am more concerned in learning how Garcia is stepping up and being a leader of this team.
Running Back Stable “Pre-Lattimore”
Love the fact that Giles had a good day against the second team defense. I have said before that this Spring is about Giles, Miles, Sherman and Maddox stating their case for playing time in 2010. Seems Giles stated his case nicely and could be poised to make it hard for Marcus. This is a very good thing folks. The stable is the best I have ever seen. Obviously, George Rogers was the best but we have 4-5 running backs that are very talented and have huge upside. Wow.
Who is this Marty Markett?
This former sprinter, walk-on, defensive back had 2 INTs yesterday. Is the the next Bryce Sherman story?
Good to see Dion LeCorn getting some work
Dion is giving Tori Gurley a run at the slot and should get reps in 2010. Still feel that Tori and Alshon are the Top 2 in the WR club.
Verdict still out on the ‘no-huddle’
The Gamecocks have been toying with a no-huddle scheme. I am still unsure that is the direction we need to go but what do I know…your thoughts?
Well the first spring scrimmage is in the books and you see above some of my thoughts. What is your thinking thus far of the ‘Cocks in Spring Ball?
