USC Gamecocks vs. Tennessee Volunteers Basketball Preview

ncaaf_southcarolinagamecocksThe USC Gamecocks (14-11, 5-6 SEC) will host the No. 20 Tennessee Vols (19-6, 7-4) today at 1:30 p.m. at the Colonial Life Arena.

This is a match-up that has been not so kind to the Gamecocks.  SC has not beaten the Vols since Feb. 17, 2007, and UT has dominated the series winning 8 of the last 10 meetings between these squads.

Tennessee leads the series 32-23 all-time but the Gamecocks need to reverse their fortunate’s and get back on the winning track after some bad losses lately.  Could this be the game as it is at home where Carolina is 11-2 this season?

Last Game:

The Vols turned a close game into a blowout midway the first half after a 9-0 run gave them a 27-12 lead three minutes before halftime. The rout didn’t end as UT cruised to a 79-53 victory behind 30 points from forward Wayne Chism.  Did not help that USC shot 27% that day either.

Who to watch:

Tennessee — F Wayne Chism (13.2 ppg., 7.1 rpg.), G Scotty Hopson (12.8 ppg., 3.4 rpg.), G Bobby Maze (9.2 ppg., 3.1 apg.).

South Carolina — G Devan Downey (23 ppg., 3.6 apg.), G Brandi Raley-Ross (11.2 ppg., 3.5 rpg.), F Sam Muldrow (10.1 ppg., 6.4 rpg.).

What will happen:

Of course we have to say that Devan has to have a good day scoring the ball and getting to the basket.  Devan is the offensive engine for SC.  Also forward Sam Muldrow, who set career highs with 23 points and four 3s vs. Arkansas on Wednesday, must play big in this game.  Need another 20+ game from him.  Also need Raley-Ross or Galloway to step up big today.  To win Carolina must have shots fall today.  They like to shoot 60+ shots and lately 30 of those are from three ball land.  Gotta get 40%+ of those to go through the net today to hang with UT.

UT has size and length that must be contained to some degree.  SC must block out and get some rebounds.  UT can not be allowed to score easy buckets.  Last game the SC transition defense was bad so that has to improve this game to be successful.  UT with Chism, is just a bad match up for Carolina and one that I do not see getting corrected today.  Let’s be honest today – for SC to win this, UT must struggle and have a bad day.  I don’t see it happening.  I feel Carolina will play much better this game that the two recent outings but I think the UT length will prove too much today.

Prediction:  USC 75 UT 84
