Big game with the number one team in the nation coming into Columbia to take on The University of South Carolina Gamecocks. The University of Kentucky Wildcatsare making winning in the SEC look easy and continue to ride their undefeated streak. For the Gamecocks, a win is in big demand to correct their three game losing streak.
What is special for this game is the fact that two of the best point guards in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and in the country will be on the same floor in this game. Both guards are electric and are the clear leaders of their teams. What I go back and forth on is this question…..Which guard is better?
Here is a break down of their stats-
USC’s Devan Downey (5’9 170 lbs)
Has played and started in 19 games. Averages 32.5 minutes per game. Has a FG percentage of .429 and a three point percentage of .348. He shoots .802 from the Free Throw line. Averages 3.3 rebounds per game, 0 blks and 3.6 assists per game. He has averaged 21.9 points per game this season. He’s averaging 31.6 points per game in five SEC contests and is second nationally in steals (3.2).
UK’s John Wall (6’4 195 lbs)
Has played and started in 18 games. Averages 33.3 minutes per game. Has a FG percentage of .493 and a three point percentage of .356. He shoots .800 from the Free Throw line. Averages 3.7 rebounds per game and has 9 blocks. He’s averaging 17 points per game — fourth in the SEC — and is first in assists (6.9) and second in steals (2.1).
As you can see the players are comparable in many of the stats listed above which makes it hard choice as to which is better. Both have loads of talent and a unique ability to create their own shot. Both players can take over a game at any moment and both can make you sit back and say “wow.”
To me, entering this game tonight and thus far this season, Devan Downey is the best PG in the country. Reasoning: The way thus far in SEC play he has taken over games, the many different ways he can create his shot given his size and lastly the way he leads the gamecocks as they all look to him to be the USC offense.
Do you agree with me that Devan is better than John?
