Gamecocks Hardwood Report: Clemson Beaten, 64-60

The South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Clemson Tigers by the score of 64-60 in Columbia, SC today.  The win by South Carolina snapped a six game losing streak in men’s hoops to the Tigers and adds to the fall sports report card for SC.

Clemson came into Sunday’s match-up off a 69-61 loss at home to Michigan.  The Gamecocks, on the other hand, won at home against Delaware State by score of 74-61.

Bruce Ellington showed lots of talent with his 14 points but what really aided the Gamecocks to the win was his clutch 3-pointer as the game was coming to a close and Clemson was trying to rally.  As noted before about this team, they spread the ball out as four players scored in double digits.

This Gamecocks blog is a big fan of Richardson and Ellington in the back court, these two are future SEC stars.  Malik Cooke also has a good all-around game and is proving to be everything he was billed after transferring from Nevada.  One thing for certain about this club is they have lots of upside and if Horn can coach them up, well, prepare yourself SEC.  It may be one year away but as stated before, this team will surprise quite a few in 2010-2011.

The negatives to take away from this game were on the rebounding side and free throws.  The Gamecocks coming in were ranked as the #3 best team in the nation in rebounding.  Clemson beat them on the boards 30-27.  Let’s all hope this was just a one game thing and they will bounce back.  Free throws, well you know the drill as this has been an issue for Horn’s boys for a while.  SC shot 8-15 from the charity strike.  Do better.

The win was great to get for USC as it moves them to 6-1 overall with their next game against Wofford (4-5) at home on Saturday.
