Gamecocks Hardwood Report: Wofford Beaten 64-53

The Gamecocks defeated Wofford by the score of 64-53.

“Big Sam” Muldrow (6-9 forward) finished with 14 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks and freshman point guard Bruce Ellington added a team-high 18 points.  It was a game marred by 25 second half fouls and four technical (Diggs 2, Galloway 1 and Cooke 1), but USC mustered up enough late to get their sixth game in a row – the longest winning streak in the Darrin Horn era – which improves USC to 7-1 overall.

In the game, the Gamecocks should a lot of fight and that is the biggest thing to take away from this game.  The Gamecocks had a 32-20 lead at half but Wofford fought back and made it a game.  The Terriers were scrappy but the Gamecocks responded.  It was nice to see from such a young team.  In a lot of cases a young team would have not withstood the battling, but the Gamecocks showed a lot of poise in this game.

The other bright spots:  Bench scoring, as SC got 14 from the bench.  Love the “team first” approach of this squad.  The last bright spot is the play of Muldrow and Ellington.  These two are becoming the heart of this team and they are continuing to step up each game.

Oh and South Carolina won the rebounding margin 36-29.  In every game, except one, the ‘Cocks have outrebounded the other team.  This is great to see as last year it seems they could not out-rebound a church team.  Glad to see this stat improve.

Only negative, 19  turnovers in the game.  Need to reduce that.

Moving on…

South Carolina travels to No. 2 Ohio State (7-0) next Saturday for a 2 p.m. marquee matchup on CBS.
