South Carolina Basketball: Five Things Learned in Wofford Win

south20carolina20logoThe South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Wofford Terriers by the score of 57-45.  This win gives USC is fourth win in the past five games, the lone loss was against second ranked Ohio State.

Nailing the three point shots is what contributed to the win as USC hit a season high 11 three-pointers.

The Gamecocks were paced by guard Bruce Ellington, who scored a season-high 17 points. Ellington, who will fly down to Orlando Thursday to join the Gamecock football team, hit five of Carolina’s season high 11 three pointers.

The win puts USC at an even record as it now stands at 6-6 overall.

Let’s look at five things we learned from the win:

1. USC’s Damien Leonard is awakening – He seems to be finding his way of late having made ten of his last 19 shots from deep over the past four games. Against Wofford, he hit 4-of-6 three point attempts.  On the night, Leonard finished with 14 points.  This is good news as he is a key player for the offense to have success in the SEC play.

2. USC is a block machine – Entering the game, South Carolina ranked fifth in the SEC and was ranked among the nation’s top 30 with 5.4 blocks per game.  Against Wofford, USC had 7 blocks.

3. USC can win without Gill and Cooke – For the first part of this season, Gill and Cook have been the leading scorers so it is refreshing to see other team members step up when those two struggled.  Also 40 of the Gamecocks 57 points came from the bench.

4. Bruce Ellington is finding his shot – Too bad he has to go to the football team for a week as he seemed to find his shot.  He scored a season high 17 points.

5. USC has to improve on the glass going forward – USC allowed the Terriers to outrebound them 31-23 and USC allowed Wofford to get 11 offensive rebounds.  This stat has to improve going forward.

The team is back on the floor Saturday against USC Upstate.
