Former Gamecocks Tight End Lied to NCAA

Truth be told, Weslye Saunders lied to the NCAA.

If you recall, Saunders took a questionable trip and it sparked the interest of the NCAA to come to Columbia for some questioning.  Then the ‘Whitney Issue’ and then him being removed from the team.  Quite the summer of 2010.

Now, he admits to lying.  In his interview with Josh Kendall of The State that can be read HERE.  I found this quote from Wes interesting –

“I believe I violated some NCAA policies,” Saunders said. “Such as the people I was associating myself with. One guy I thought was a friend at South Carolina who I won’t name. Turns out he was a runner for an agent, and I didn’t know. (I was) taking trips with people I didn’t know exactly what they did. They weren’t actually agents and runners, but the simple fact that I didn’t know what they did was my fault.”

I am sure Coach Spurrier is not happy with Saunders talking and myself as a fan wish he would not open his mouth about this and let the investigation play out.  But I guess he feels he needs to share his side before he is painted as a guilty party in the NCAA report.  I do agree with USC AD Eric Hyman not letting Saunders back on them team as he (Saunders) was the source of the “hoopla.”  No word yet on when the report will be concluded so stay tuned on that front.

Your thought on Wes spilling his guts to Josh Kendall?

We do wish Saunders the best in the NFL and he should get drafted as he is a great tight end, just guilty of some bad choices that has led to a sour issue for Carolina Football that needs to conclude so we all can move on.
