Today there are 57 days until kickoff.
57% or 57.9% to be more accurate was the rate at which Carolina’s opponents converted 4th downs last season. In contrast, South Carolina converted 74.2% of its chances on 4th down.
Typically when teams go for it on 4th down they do it for one of two reasons. First, teams do it late in games when they can’t afford to punt. Second, teams do it when there isn’t much to gain, and they think they can get it. South Carolina’s opponents usually fell in the former category. Of the 19 attempts, 11 were in the final quarter. However, it should be noted that opponents only converted 54.5% of the 4th quarter attempts, so the Gamecock defense was stout on 4th down regardless of the timing. Similar success this year could be one of those ‘little things’ that separate good teams from great teams.
