Gamecocks Football: Say It Isn’t So Bryce Sherman

There is some indications that Bryce Sherman will not be returning to the football team.

Sherman, 5’4″, 157-pound, is a fan favortite and many call him ‘Sherm the Worm.’ If you recall he joined the football team in 2009 after leaving the USC track team. The rising junior, started his Gamecock football career at running back but switched to wide receiver / kick returner.

In 2009, Sherman made his statement with 24 kick returns for 507 yards and 9 rushing attempts for 57 yards. In 2010, Sherman’s main duty was returning kicks. He ran 35 returns for a total of 713 yards.

Now rumor has it he is leaving the football program according to GamecockCentral, South Carolina’s Rivals website;

A source close to the team confirmed the news to Gamecock Central.com on Saturday afternoon. The source said that Sherman had decided to quit, although receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr. Sherman’s position coach, told Gamecock Central.com that if the decision had been made, Sherman had yet to inform the coaching staff.

Could playing time be the factor?  Sherman is buried third on the WR depth chart, behind Jason Barnes and Ace Sanders and many expect him to have competition for the role of kick returner due to talented newcomers in incoming freshman Damiere Byrd and Bruce Ellington, who is joining the football team this season.

Another reason that is being talked about is his love of track and wanting to run again.  But before you say your goodbye’s to him as a football player for USC, Bryce Sherman himself tweets

I kno everybody hearing different things bout football. Im not saying anything about it. I will let EVERYONE know on Monday thanks God Bless

So I guess we will know the truth soon if he stays or goes.
