There are no doubts around Columbia, S.C. that Connor Shaw is the man under center for USC in 2012. The only looming question going into spring ball is who will be the backup.
Shaw is the unquestioned starting quarterback in 2012 due to his performances the season prior. He was 112-of-171 last season for 1,448 yards and 12 touchdowns versus six interceptions. He also averaged 4.2 yards per carry and found the end zone seven more times. He lost just one game as the starting quarterback.
Now back to the question at-hand, the backup spot. It will be a battle between sophomore Dylan Thompson and redshirt freshman Tanner McEvoy.
Thompson played in three games last season but only threw two passes completing both for 17 yards. He also ran it five times for 16 total yards and his first and only career touchdown. He was the backup in 2011 but McEvoy has his eyes on the No. 2 slot. Should be fun to watch and don’t be surprised in McEvoy emerges as the backup.
