The USC Gamecocks are on the verge of starting practice but before that begins let’s continue our “Summer Position Reports.” Here is a look at the tight ends –
TE’s in the mix
TE: Justice Cunningham (Jr. / 6’3” 262lbs) – USC plans to use Justice in the same role that they used Patrick DiMarco in. He will double time in a hybrid FB/TE role but what makes him special is his blocking ability. Justice has logged a lot of snaps and while he is not a downfield threat in the passing game at TE, he can catch the ball if his number is called. USC needs him to be consistent in 2011.
TE: Cory Simmons (RS Freshman / 6’4” 260lbs.) – Quietly had a decent Spring and should get some decent looks at TE this season. Good ball skills but needs to improve on his blocking skills.
TE: Chaun Greshman (So. / 6’2” 265lbs.) – Former defense guy that is now at tight end. Needs work on his TE skills but is a good blocker. When he sees the field, it will be to block.
Other TE’s
TE: Payton Brady (Jr. / 6’3” 226lbs.) – Would be shocked if he plays more than mop up duty. Good athlete but that is not enough as USC needs someone that can block and stretch the field.
TE: Rory Anderson (Fr. / 6’5” 207lbs.) – Incoming freshman that could use a redshirt year to gain weight and learn to block better. Great at pass catching and will be a good Gamecock tight end, just maybe one year off.
TE: Drew Owens (Fr. / 6’5” 241lbs.)- Incoming freshman that has the tools to be a good tight end and could see the field if USC needs a TE to stretch the field. Would be better to redshirt but duty may call as Drew has the abilty to create the mis-match that Spurrier loves in a tight end.
