Gamecocks Football: Vic Hampton Dismissed

Vic Hampton, a cornerback for the University of South Carolina, has been dismissed from the Gamecock football team for a violation of team rules.

This is a bad blow for USC as Hampton, from Darlington (S.C.) High, is loaded with talent.  Some may not be surprised by this due to his prior history.  If you recall, he missed two spring practices in 2011 because of grades and even Spurrier commented during the recent Fan Fest tour that Hampton had work to do in order to be part of the team this fall.  On top of that, he had prior run-in’s with the law before he came to USC.  Although all charges were dropped in all his instances with law enforcement, it is a glimpse into his character.  The Gamecock coaching staff took a gamble on the young man that did not pay off.

The redshirt freshman was listed as the No. 2 at cornerback heading into 2011, listed behind Stephon Gilmore.  The Gamecocks secondary could have used his services as depth was a issue last season in the rotation.  The Gamecocks will now have to lean on redshirt freshman Cadarious Sanders and/or true freshman Martay Mattox at second-string cornerback.  Hampton was a four-star recruit out of high school and a All-American.  Now, he will not get to show off those skills as a Gamecock and prove many wrong about him.
