Continuing our look at the Gamecocks’ 2011 schedule, today we run down Vanderbilt, the 11th toughest game on the schedule.
Other Previews:
The Vanderbilt Commodores come to Columbia on September 24. It is the first road game for VU.
Why this game might be easier than expected: The Commodores are in their first year of a new coaching staff. If they don’t catch on quickly, it will be a rough transition.
Why this game might be harder than expected: Vanderbilt has given the Gamecocks trouble recently. They return every offensive starter and eight on defense.
5 Points to consider: 1)Vandy has had SC’s number lately. After winning in 2007 and 2008 games, they lost by 4 and 14 the last two years.
2) Commodore starting running back Warren Norman is a quality back who can make the Gamecocks uncomfortable. He only gained 459 yards last year, but he averaged 6 yards per carry.
3) VU is missing three defensive starters from last year: two linebackers and a defensive end. The new players there should give Lattimore and company a chance to run for plenty between the tackles.
4) The Commodores only scored over 20 points in 4 games last year, and they didn’t score 30 in any games. The Gamecocks may not need to worry about the return of 11 offensive starters too much.
5) Vanderbilt will have its third head coach in three seasons. Even for a bunch of smart kids, that’s a lot to ask them to master by week four.
Way too early prediction: As usual this game will be closer than comfort for most fans. South Carolina simply has too much talent and depth. 28-13 Gamecocks.
