Phil Steele is making some noise in the college football ranks as he gives teasers to what is in store for his national football magazine that is set for release on June 7th. Leading up to that day, Steele recently released his 2011 All-American list and All-SEC team. Littered on those lists are quite a few South Carolina Gamecock football players.
Earning preseason first-team All-America honors and first-team All-SEC are junior wide receiver Alshon Jeffery and junior defensive end Devin Taylor. Sophomore running back Marcus Lattimore and junior cornerback Stephon Gilmore earned second team All-America accolades.
Lattimore and Gilmore, second team? Interesting….
Also on the list are senior defensive tackle Travian Robertson , who was a selected as a preseason second team All-SEC pick, while junior center T.J. Johnson, senior offensive tackle Rokevious Watkins and freshman defensive end Jadeveon Clowney were named to the preseason All-SEC third team. Senior defensive end Melvin Ingram and junior safety DeVonte Holloman earned spots on Steele’s fourth-team All-SEC squad.
Seeing Clowney already getting respect is nice to see. I feel that Antonio Allen and Shaq Wilson should have been on the list as third or fourth team at least. Hopefully the slight will fuel them.
Let’s hope this early recognition for some of these Gamecocks from Mr. Steele translates to on-the-field success in 2011.
