Spurrier Had a Good Week: A Statue and More Money

Steve Spurrier had a pretty good weeek for a college football coach, seriously who can say that they got a statue and a pay increase in the same week?

This past Saturday during the Florida Gators Spring Football game, a statue of Steve Spurrier was unveiled.  Florida honored its three Heisman Trophy winners with life-sized statues outside the stadium. The Gators unveiled bronze statues of Spurrier (1966), Wuerffel (1996) and Tebow (2007) during halftime of Saturday’s spring game.  Spurrier threw for more than 4,800 yards and 37 touchdowns as a three-year starter in Gainesville.

Fast forward to Friday afternoon and Spurrier gets a well-deserved pay increase from the University of South Carolina.  Spurrier’s contract runs through the 2013 season, but he is now set to make a guaranteed $2.8 million in 2011, $2.88 million in 2012 and $2.95 million in 2013. The board unanimously approved the adjustment yet no extension.

Not a bad six days for the Head Ball Coach.  Without a doubt, all of it is deserved both at Florida and at South Carolina.  He was a outstanding player and coach at UF.  At USC, he helped to usher in a SEC East Championship and has laid the foundation for future success.  Many people in life could do good trying to be like Spurrier as a player and coach.
