South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier conducted a exclusive interview with ESPN recently that provided some interesting insight on his thinking with the team and his tenure.
One of the most interesting things out of the Chris Low story is that Spurrier said players like Marcus Lattimore and Alshon Jeffery could keep him coaching in Columbia, S.C. for another three or four years.
“When your best players are also your hardest workers, and I’m talking about guys like Marcus Lattimore and Alshon Jeffery, you’ve got a chance to have a really good football team,” Spurrier told ESPN’s Chris Low. “We have good leaders here. We don’t seem to have guys with their own selfish agendas that we’ve maybe had in the past.”
Another interesting statement he provides is the potential he sees in the team for 2011 now that some guy named Clowney is in the mix, is possibly 11 wins…wow. {For the record, if that happens Moose our editor will run down George Rogers Blvd in his underwear.}
Here is what Spurrier said:
“With Lattimore, we went from seven wins up to nine, and it could have easily been ten,” Spurrier told Low. “When Jadeveon comes in here, maybe nine will go (to) eleven or more.”
Oh, and on quarterbacks the Ol’ Ball Coach had this to say:
“If we can get our quarterback situation straightened out and find somebody everybody can rally around, we have a chance.”
“We just haven’t had the quarterback here that I think we can have,” Spurrier said. “We’ve made some mistakes in recruiting, and I have to do a better job of coaching them.” (Uh, Stephen Garcia are you paying attention?)
And lastly, how the question that always seems to be asked lately dealing with play-calling…
“I feel like I’m going to do it this year. I feel like I can still do it and feel like I can do it better than anybody, and that’s what I should do.”
The ESPN story closes with a great statement from Alshon Jeffery –
“We’re on a mission, and it’s not just getting to Atlanta.” LOVE IT!
