In a surprise move, Connor Shaw gets the start versus East Carolina.
Coach Steve Spurrier announced on his call-in show Thursday night that sophomore Connor Shaw, not fifth-year senior Stephen Garcia, will start at quarterback against East Carolina on Saturday.
Here is what he said:
“I said way back we’re going to have a preseason competition to see who the starter is going to be (the) first game,” said Spurrier on his call-in show. “We’ve gone through preseason, so it’s over. The guy who rated the best was Connor Shaw. He played better than Stephen Garcia. Simple as that. So he’s going to start the game. He’s going to play the first quarter and Stephen’s going to play the second quarter. And we’re going to see what happens after that. That’s the fair way to do it.”
Hmmm….
I for one question the call from a outsider’s viewpoint. As it could be argued that Stephen Garcia deserves the start due to all the hurdles he had to jump through to get to this point but I see the point of rewarding the better performer. I trust Spurrier and have my fingers crossed he is right about this one.
I fully expect Garcia to be the starter next week versus UGa. He presents the best option to win the SEC East.
On a sidenote, this does break the streak Garcia had going of 28 consecutive starts at quarterback dating back to 2008.
Ok. Now that we are all shocked by the coach. Let’s move on. Let’s beat ECU.
