Oh 1984, you seem so long ago. Ronald Reagan is President, the Apple Macintosh is introduced and the US Bell System is broken up. Not to mention some band called Duran Duran was rocking it out.
1984 was a good year for USC and should have been a better year. Let’s stroll down memory lane…
USC was ranked #2 in the country in 1984 when it lost at Navy wrecking a shot at the national championship. The Gamecocks entered that game with a 9-0 record and a shot at the No. 1 national ranking (top-ranked Nebraska also lost on that fateful Saturday in November), but they wound up getting trounced 38-21 by the Midshipmen.
Many will say that that was South Carolina’s year. Many will say this is this their year.
The current Gamecock players realize they can’t take this game for granted Saturday or their national championship dreams will also go up in smoke just like in 1984.
Here is a good read on this subject – USC player: “people only remember the loss to Navy” – and here is a short video to remind people about 1984. Let’s not see history repeat itself on Saturday. Beat Navy.
