As I said yesterday, I wouldn’t watch much of the draft but it turned out to be a lie. With the train wreck that ESPN threw out there last night with Gruden, Kiper, Jackson and Young it was not good TV, but still fun to watch.
The first couple picks were easy to predict but after that things got a little crazy. We all knew that Tebow was going to get drafted sometime, but most didn’t think in the first round. Kipers favorite player Jimmy Clausen was the big surprise as he was ranked as high as 4th best player in the draft, and the #1 QB coming out this year but no takers.
Biggest Surprise of the Night: Most would say Tebow to Denver, but I am going to have to go with Jacksonville’s 10th pick. Most analyst didn’t have Tyson Alualu going in the first round, but Jacksonville decided to take a chance on the California defensive lineman. For most of us, when we hear Pac-10 we don’t think of defense first, but I guess Jacksonville must see something in Alualu.
Where did the QB’s go: With all the hype in this years draft falling to the top 4 QB’s, it was a little surprising that only Tebow and Bradford were taken in the first round. This is a good thing for teams looking for a QB in the future. As now they can get a first round talent with 2nd round money. I see Clausen and McCoy going pretty quickly in the 2nd round tonight.
The Raiders: Most, if not all were expecting Al Davis and the Raiders to have another crazy first round draft choice this year, but went with the safe pick in Alabama’s Rolando McClain. I was hoping they would try to find another no name gem that we could discuss for years as a bust. I have a feeling McClain is going to be an excellent LB for the Raiders.
Where did Jr’s Panthers go: Found them, they traded away their first round pick for a 2nd round pick. Please draft smart tonight, maybe a defensive tackle or a QB. Maybe somebody to play opposite of Steve Smith?
I hope you like cold weather Spiller: Probably the worst thing for a fast RB that gets hurt on just about every other play, is to be stuck in the cold snowy weather of Northern New York, with the possibility of playing in Toronto very soon. We wish you the best, but we probably won’t get to see you play, unless the Bill’s play the Panthers.
Detroit Rock City: I am going to go out on a limb but I feel like the Lions are building a pretty nice team for the future. If the scouts are right Suh should be a star right away in the NFL. With the previous draft talent lining up, and the pickup of Suh and Best at RB last night, watch out NFC north.
Oklahoma players: Bob Stoops you must be asking yourself how did we go 8-5 last year with these players. 3 of the top 4 picks were players from Oklahoma, and 4 out of the top 21 picks were Sooners. Granted 2 were injured last season, but still. If the hype about McCoy and Williams is true, then you should have had the best rush defense in the country last year.
I can tell you know that I will not be watching the 2nd round tonight but if it is anything like the first round look for more surprises to come. Hopefully a team will draft Norwood early as he is going to be a good one and hope the rest of the Gamecocks find a home too.
