As we know, the Clemson Tigers continue to interview candidates for its vacant men’s basketball coaching job.  The interviews are taking place in Charlotte and Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips is expected to continue interviews thru the weekend.  Bill Carr and Associates is the firm being used as the “go between.”  Phillips has said he wants this done in a few weeks so let’s recap what has been reported or rumored thus far….

On Friday, the Clemson AD interviewed Jacksonville coach Cliff Warren, Wofford coach Mike Young and Old Dominion coach Blaine Taylor.

According to multiple reports, Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips interviewed former Boston College coach Al Skinner and current Wright State coach Brad Brownell Thursday.

Rumored names on the list of other coaches CU is interested in and could pursue –

  • Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel
  • Ohio coach John Groce
  • Baylor coach Scott Drew
  • Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson
  • Wichita State coach Greg Marshall
  • Current Clemson Interim coach Ron Bradley
  • VCU coach Shaka Smart
  • Western Kentucky coach Ken McDonald

Clemson’s list likely lost a name Thursday when Butler announced it had signed coach Brad Stevens (who led the Bulldogs to the NCAA title game) to a 12-year contract extension, running through the 2021-22 season.  But seriously did CU think they could have gotten him?

In other news surrounding this situation….

Clemson basketball recruit Marcus Thornton asked Clemson for a release from his letter of intent this past week.  Thornton signed with Clemson last November and is the only signee for the Tigers’ 2010 class.

Current Tiger freshman forward Devin Booker continued to contemplate a potential transfer while waiting to hear who the Tigers’ next coach would be, if they lose him it could be a big blow for success next season.  And it seems Noel Johnson is also considering a transfer out of the program due to playing time last season.  No word yet on whether Booker and Johnson have filed paperwork to transfer out as it seems to just be a thought right now.
