Gamecock Stock Report, week of Dec. 16 2011

Welcome to the South Carolina stock market. Each week, this Gamecocks blog will take a look at what’s trending in the world of Gamecock athletics.

In these we we will look at all Gamecock sports and their activities so some things will be of interest while others may not but the point is to give you a snapshot of the good, bad and so-so occurring within the school’s sports program.

Here is our first run at it, we hope you enjoy as we will try to publish these each Friday and we hope you will comment below on what we see trending as we welcome your input…

Rising

Gamecocks Set to Begin Bowl Prep – The Gamecocks have rested and now will begin preparations for the Capital One Bowl showdown with Nebraska.  First practice is today at 6 p.m.

Gamecocks Recruiting Heats Up– The Football coaches are making a strong push on some remaining targets out there from Jordan Diggs to Mike Davis.  The coaches are working to “close the deal” on many of them and continue to build the program.

Gamecock Baseball – Yes, we said baseball as the Gamecocks are the defending back-to-back national champs.  Recently, three Gamecocks were named to the NCBWA Preseason All-America Team and USC assistant Chad Holbrook was named the 2011 ABCA/Baseball America Assistant Coach Of The Year.

Dawn Staley got win 100 – Coach Staley’s women’s basketball squad beat SC State recently which provided their coach her 100th win as head coach of the Gamecocks. The win puts the Gamecocks at 8-2, the best record they have had since the opening of the 2003-04 season.

Flatlining

USC men’s hoops – The Gamecocks squeaked by with a win versus the PC Blue Hose and now face the mighty Ohio State Buckeyes.  Ugh.

Falling

Recruitment of Jonathan Bullard – Many around Gamecock nation still have hopes that the standout defensive lineman from Crest High School would be a future Gamecock but it is becoming clear it will not happen.  He is leaning heavy to the Clemson side and you are also seeing a heavy push from Florida.  Would have been great to have him on the other side of Jadeveon Clowney in the future but does not seem as of this moment it will happen.

Coaching Carousel -Stop the ride. Many around Gamecock nation are holding their breathes to see what defensive coach Ellis Johnson will do with being on the short-list at Southen Miss.  We say don’t go.  Especially after Spurrier Jr. and Elliott decided to turn down the latest overtures from CCU.  USC already lost Jay Graham so keeping Johnson around but help the overall program remain solid and foucsed heading into bowl season and recruiting.

The NCAA Soap Opera – Ready to turn the page on all this but must wait until Feb. 2012.
