If you read yesterday’s field report, you know that we’re not completely sure what to make of the Gamecocks’ weekend. Georgia is a team that had lost to bad teams and beaten good teams, so we really don’t know if they are any good yet. South Carolina didn’t appear to play their best ball at times, but they won the series. It looks like many of the voters didn’t know what to do with the Gamecocks either.
Most left them in the same place, but one moved them up…..let’s take a look….
Poll | Rank | Previous |
Baseball America | 4 | 4 |
Collegiate Baseball | 7 | 7 |
NCBWA | 6 | 6 |
Perfect Game | 5 | 5 |
USA Today Coaches | 4 | 6 |
The change in the Coaches’ poll may have more to do with what other teams did than what South Carolina did. The Gamecocks moved ahead of Florida State and Oklahoma. The Seminoles went 1-3, with a win over Virginia, two losses to Virginia and a loss to Florida. Oklahoma went 1-4 with two losses to both Arizona State and Texas A&M and a win over Texas A&M.
South Carolina is going to have trouble moving up much without losses from other teams. This weekend may provide an exception. With the series at Florida, USC could move up with a series win. Because of Florida’s quality, a series loss probably won’t move them down much either.
