LSU Field Report: The Good and The Bad

South Carolina lost 2 out of 3 to LSU at home over the weekend to end the regular season.  For a detailed write up of the games, read this from the Feathered Warrior over at Garnet and Black Attack.

The weekend wasn’t all bad.  Here is the good and the bad…..

Bad: The Gamecocks had a chance to win the SEC and they didn’t.

Good:  The Gamecocks won the SEC East for the second year in a row.

Bad: USC’s Thursday night game was delayed to Sunday, so Michael Roth doesn’t have as much rest before the SEC tournament.

Good: USC get’s a bye in the tournament by virtue of their East Division title, so Roth can rest until Thursday.

Bad: LSU’s pitching kept the Gamecocks bats in check.

Good: Adam Matthews absolutely exploded in the #2 slot ahead of Christian Walker.  In the final 2 games, Matthews was 5-8 (.625) with a sacrifice fly, two RBIs and 3 stolen bases in 3 attempts.

Bad: LSU scored two runs in the top of the last inning in each of the two losses.

Good: South Carolina scored in the bottom of each last inning and brought the tying or go ahead run to the plate in each game.  They don’t quit.

Bad: South Carolina started out 1-5 in conference play and was 3-7 and 5 games out of first place 1/3 of the way through the conference season.

Good: The Gamecocks won 15 of 19 games and won the East outright.

It was disappointing to lose the SEC championship in extra innings at home, but LSU is a very good team and there is nothing to be ashamed about.  The Gamecocks’ favorite part of the season is now upon us.  We’ll have frequent updates this week for the SEC baseball tournament so stick with LOHD.

Up next: The foe is TBD. South Carolina will play in the late game on Wednesday night in Hoover.
