Ole Miss and Pomeranz Prove Too Much For Gamecocks

341-stadium03_slideshow_main_prod_affiliate_74The South Carolina Gamecocks fell today to the Ole Miss Rebels by the score of 3-0 in the opening round of the SEC baseball tournament in Hoover, Ala.

Ole Miss, in their winning efforts, was lead the bat of Miles Hamblin and the arm of Drew Pomeranz.

Pomeranz pitched seven innings and had 7 K’s.  He only allowed two batters to reach base in the same inning twice and only two South Carolina batters reached third base. Pomeranz, who entered the game with a 2.39 ERA, improved to 8-2 on the year.   Remember last time out he had USC in a shut out in the 6th until USC was able to get him out of there and get to their bullpen.  This time he proved a little to powerful and the Gamecocks could not hit his stuff again.  On top of that, the Ole Miss bullpen did their job this round as the Gamecocks could not get anything going in this game from start to finish.  Ole Miss needed really just one swing of the bat from their catcher Miles Hamblin who hit a 2 run blast in the 3rd to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead.  Their final run came in the seventh inning on a two-out RBI single by Taylor Hashman.

Gamecocks had no offense with just seven hits (2 each by Bradley and Walker).  Wish I could say more but the offense did not show up.  And Belcher lasted only 3 innings.  So not a lot of positives to pull from this besides the bullpen did well after Belcher.

Ole Miss and South Carolina have faced-off three times in the SEC Tournament’s history with the Rebels picking up shutout victories in both wins over the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks (43-14) play Auburn at 9:30 a.m (CST) on Thursday in an elimination game.

In grading my 3 keys from yesterday’s preview, I give a F on #1 and #3 while a A in #2 but it did not matter too much.
