Justin Smoak former University of South Carolina and Stratford High baseball star has been called up by the Texas Rangers.
Smoak will be called up from the Texas Rangers Triple A farm team in Oklahoma City for this weekend’s series against the Detroit Tigers.
A top 20 pick in the MLB draft back in 2008, Smoak has risen quickly in the Texas Rangers organization. He was rated as the No. 4 best prospect in the Minor Leagues by Baseball America. With all the rookie hype in the NL surrounding Jason Haywood, maybe Justin Smoak can ease into the first base role for the Rangers without too much over-hype. Smoak will be the 4th former Gamecock to play in the MLB this season, he will be joining Brian Roberts (Baltimore), Adam Everett (Detroit) and Landon Powell (Oakland).
We wish Justin the best of luck in the big leagues. I think all gamecock fans will be pulling for the Rangers when Smoak walks onto the field for the first time.
