Coach Tanner and the USC fan base have to be still in awe this morning at the pitching performance that Michael Roth put on at the CWS last night against rival Clemson. Given the situation, the stage and the pressure it is safe to say it was the best pitching job by a South Carolina pitcher in years. With his strong performance, USC beat Clemson by the score of 5-1.
Roth was making his first start after pitching 26 1-3 innings over 35 relief appearances this season. Last year he started nonconference games vs. GSU and CofC.
Before Friday, his longest career outing was 4 1-3 innings against College of Charleston. This year his longest outing was 3 1-3 innings of relief against Bucknell in regionals. Roth pitched South Carolina’s first complete game at the CWS since Steve Bondurant beat Clemson 10-2 in 2002.
In the 2010 College World Series, Roth has a 0.79 ERA in three appearances. Opponents are hitting just .075 against him (3-for-40).
He pitched a 3 hit, complete game at the CWS in 109 pitches. What more could you want from your starting pitcher?
Coach Tanner says it best –
“That was one of the most impressive performances I’ve ever had a young man pitch for me,” Tanner said. “That was certainly one for the record books, as far as I’m concerned.”
South Carolina and Clemson will meet again on Saturday night at 7 p.m. EDT on ESPN in a “winner-take-all” type game as the victor moves on to the National Championship.
