South Carolina Gamecocks Recruiting Update

The big news of the day is that defensive end Corey Simmions committed to the gamecocks after spending a few days on the campus.  This guy is labeled a “sleeper” and many feel he could be a pleasant surprise down the road after he gets into the program and develops.  He is the son of a former NFL player and has potential, let’s hope it pans out.

In Lattimore news….The Byrnes running back did not make an unofficial visit to Auburn Saturday. This coming week, Marcus will have his in person meetings with Auburn head coach Gene Chizik and USC head coach Steve Spurrier.

WR Ace Sanders (5-9 165) of Bradenton, FL took his official visit to USC this weekend and enjoyed his visit, according to his mother yet no pledge was made.  Sanders has offers from USC, West Virginia, South Florida, Purdue, Indiana, Syracuse, Iowa, and Rutgers. Sanders’ mother was unsure as to when Sanders plans to make a decision.

Gamecocks are showing interest in CB/S Lucky Radley and CB/S Sharrod Golightly late in the process.  Sharrod was solid with Vandy yet rumored to being open to “listening” to other schools and the Gamecocks are one of them.

Antoine Pozniak  is a linebacker that remains in the mix and it seems because of the pursuit of Parker that this one is taking some time.  No real movement with this guy of late.

USC Coach Jeep Hunter is also doing his best to get defensive end Calvin Smith to choose the Gamecocks after giving up on Tennessee after the Lane Kiffin issues.  I don’t see the Gamecocks landing him but I hope I am wrong,  He made his official visit to Tuscaloosa this weekend and walked away highly impressed.

Some other recruiting news is to pay attention to is the Gamecocks pursuit of DT Todd Chandler.  He is giving the gamecocks a chance at recruiting them with two weeks left till signing day.  Chandler was committed to Miami, then backed off and pledged to go to USF.  But recently backed off that and has opened the process up again.  He has now officially visited Syracuse, Colorado State, and Louisville. USC Coach Jeep Hunter is pursuing this guy hard and hope he can land him during his visit on Jan. 29th.

USC’s recruitment of ATH Jeremy Deering of Tampa is over due to his choosing to visit Rutgers over the Gamecocks.  Also the chances of landing TE Mychal Rivera seems to be real slim after he visited the Vols and likes what he saw.

No real movement with Beaufort LB Justin Parker recently, seems it is still down to USC and Clemson.

DE/TE Kegan Funderburk is set to visit Carolina this coming weekend after visiting SC State.  Big question with this kid is grades and if he can qualify.
