USC Gamecocks 2011 Recruiting Update

williams-brice-stadium1Let’s take a quick second and provide a update on the 2011 USC Gamecocks Recruiting Class.  As you know, USC is sitting with seven recruits that have given their verbal to be future Gamecocks.

So let’s look at who has committed as of July 18th –

KJ Brent (6-4, 175) of Waxhaw, N.C. has given his pledge to be a future USC Gamecocks wide receiver.  He was the first to pledge for the 2011 class and turned down UK and many other NC schools.

QB Martay Mattox (6-1, 185) out of Athens, Ga was the next young man to say he wants to play for Coach Spurrier.  Last season, Martay passed for 1900 yds, threw 15 TDs and ran for 800 yds with 16 rushing TDs.  I am not sold on the fact that he will play QB at USC but bottom-line is he has loads of upside.  Could play in the secondary like a DeVonte Holloman.

The third commitment of the 2011 recruiting class is a defensive end named Mason Harris (6-4, 205) out of Rossville, Ga.  After reading up on this young guy, I like him.   Seems to fit the mold of DE’s that Ellis Johnson likes as he has a good motor and knows how to get around the edge.

Linebacker Edward Muldrow (6-4, 196) out of Snellville, Ga committed to the Gamecocks over Clemson.  Some put Muldrow in the talk of being one of the best LB’s in the nation.  Could see early time as a spur in Coach Johnson’s D.

DB Jared Henry (6-0, 184) out of Jacksonville, Fl who chose USC over USF and UCF.  He could either be a DB or a Safety at USC.  His current role is a safety, where he had 100 tackles and 2 INTs last season.

A defensive lineman by the name of Angelo Watley (6-3, 220) from Suwanee, Ga jumped early to be a USC Gamecocks football player.  As a junior, Watley totaled 30 tackles and 7 sacks.  USC coaches compare him to Eric Norwood – that is saying a lot in my book.

The seventh recruit and most recent is another DL by the name of Deon Green (6-3, 268) out of Orlando.  He grew up in O-Burg not too far from USC and reportedly grew up a Gamecock.  He had 75 tackles and 6 sacks last season at DE.  Slated to be a DL position player for the Gamecocks.  Going to go ahead and say he is going to be a great anchor up-front.  He had 28 offers to choose from and pledged to be a Gamecock.

Overall, I like this class so far and the way recruiting is going.  The coaches are not just taking anyone as they are being very targeted.  I suspect a real good class for 2011 and these 7 are just the beginning.
