Gamecock Stock Report, Week of Dec. 20 Edition

Here is another edition of our Gamecock Stock Report.  Lots of positives occurring around the program this past week and one big negative…can you guess it without looking?

The Gamecock Stock Report provides you a look at all Gamecock sports and their activities so some things will be of interest while others may not but the point is to give you a snapshot of the good, bad and so-so occurring within the school’s sports program

Check out this week’s Gamecock Stock Report:

Rising

The recruitment of Jonathan Bullard of Shelby, NC takes a positive turn after being labled as “falling” last week in our Gamecock Stock Report.  The defensive end has delayed the announcement of his college commitment until early January. Bullard had scheduled an announcement this past Wednesday afternoon.  The reason this is a good thing is he had been labeled a Clemson guy, then a Florida guy with South Carolina a distant third.  But many fingers point to an aggressive pursuit by Spurrier and crew in getting back in the mix for this needed defensive end that would be a great fill opposite Jadeveon Clowney.

Recruiting in General for USC – all indications are things are going strong.  Check out one recruits video, five USC is working to close, and one they should call.

Bowl Season – Got to love this time of the year with college football bowls and the Christmas season combined.  Here are our predictions.

Capital One Bowl Gifts – Hopefully, we don’t see these watches on EBay after the bowl game.  And hopefully USC is doing their Nebraska film study.

D.J. Swearinger says he is coming back – this was after he was one of five Gamecocks to submit paperwork to the NFL.  This is welcomed news for the 2012 season.

Women’s Hoops – not only did they beat UNC but they are 10-2 and giving back.  Coach Staley is doing amazing work in Columbia and doing it oh so quietly.

Flatlining

USC men’s hoops – The Gamecocks men’s hoops squad remains here as last week they squeaked by with a win versus the PC Blue Hose, then loss to the Ohio State but did get a needed win against SE Louisiana.

Former Gamecock football recruit Chris Payne – I could not find a good spot for him in this report but scratching my head as to why the Gamecocks did not pursue him aggressively the second time around.  If you recall, the former USC signee DB Chris Payne is out of nearby Columbia High.  Well, the reason he is here is he has signed with Texas Tech this past week. Payne played the last two seasons at Mississippi Gulf Coast JC. He also considered Michigan State, South Florida and Kentucky before deciding on the Red Raiders. He has completed his junior college academic work and will enroll at Tech in January.

Falling

USC officially has another vacancy on its football staff. As expected, Ellis Johnson was announced as the new head coach at Southern Miss. Johnson will be missed.  So who is next?

More NCAA soap opera to deal with now that C.C. Whitlock and Jadeveon Clowney had their likeness appear on a party flierBad timing as USC is dealing with another mess involving the NCAA.
